Misery in paradise

We are on Koh Chang. It is beautiful. We are staying at this hippie bohemian Thai French resort.  It is very nice.  The people are friendly and beach is two minutes away on foot.

However, from the morning or our arrival, Cork has been struck down with a febrile tropical illness of some sort. He has not been able to get out of bed for the last five days. The fevers and headache have abated, but the nausea continues. He cannot eat and is so tired. We went to a clinic yesterday they were not very helpful, although relieved us of $100 no problem. I was reassured by his good blood pressure and they did a CBC that showed a low WBC level, unsure what that tells us. The doctor said it may be Dengue, but he was not sure. Wait and see. I have exhausted my supply of zofran and he is on around the clock NSAIDs.  I avoid WebMD and hope that he is going to feel better tomorrow.

It has been difficult to be on my own with kids. We do not do much. Mostly hang out at the beach, go into town for the odd errand and watch my favorite movies from when I was twelve. So far we have watched Ferris Buellers Day off, 16 candles and Coming to America. I think FootLoose is tonight’s film. I am open to suggestions!

Cork was a trouper and walked the 10 minutes to the clinic.

Fingers crossed he feels better tomorrow.

  1. I hope Cork either recovers very soon or gets a correct diagnosis and medication. Beaming love at you all and wishing you resilience during a trying time.

  2. Looks like a beautiful place. I’m sorry Cork isn’t able to enjoy it. Hope he feels better soon! Movies for you and the kids? Princess Bride. The Goonies?

  3. Oh, no! Sending you guys all my love. Thank God you are with him, Suki, I know you will make sure he gets the best care. Be strong, Cork! We love you so much!
Odd that you ask about movies – for some reason I have been watching Turner Movie Classics and I find those old movies charming and enjoyable. I watched Jimmy Stewart in Harvey – that’s the one where he befriends an imaginary 6 foot tall rabbit. They had a whole Jimmy Stewart marathon the other day, and in one flick he played an oilman who built the first oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico and the fishermen went war with him cuz it was killing their fish. And, weirdly, Oilman Jimmy Stewart was the hero!!!! The fishermen had to learn that “progress” was good, even if it destroyed their fishing rights. At one point, Jimmy Stewart has an inspiring speech where he peers into the future and says, “Some day, why, this whole Gulf will be full of oil rigs!” And he means it as a GOOD thing. Very odd to see propaganda FOR the oil industry, and Jimmy Stewart doing his integrity schtick against the “backward” fishermen.
Anyway, if you get TCM, I recommend it for its’ entertainment value. They don’t take ’em like that anymore. Also, the kissing is really, really passionate in those old movies.
Oh, I’m so upset seeing Cork laid out like that. You poor guys. Please do keep us updated as much as possible. Love you love you love you!!!!

  4. Hi – This is a message for Courtney or Hannah or Bob or Jim – let’s all make sure we have each others’ phone numbers, so we can keep up on what’s going on. My number is 541-731-7895. I just talked to my dad and of course we feel helpless to do anything but send our love. My dad’s number is 847-729-2264. I think it would be good if we could all be in touch. Suki, if you see this, maybe you could email me your mom’s number. Jack and Addie! If you are reading this and you would like to talk, we could send messages or do a Skype call! The weather in Oregon is predictably lousy, so at least enjoy the sunshine!

  5. First, my phone is 503 752 1983 Next, films… well that’s such a matter of taste, and I am guessing you mean with the kids. The have the Leika (?) Stop-Action Studio show at the Portland Art Museum, Boxtrolls, Kubo–these are spectacular but you probably have seen them. Back to the Future? Stand by Me? Splash? The Goonies (Oregon!)? Princess Bride? Ghostbusters?
And CORK! I have no idea what health care is like over there, so all I can offer is sympathy. One thing to keep in mind is you are on a long journey, not a 2-week vacation. I guess things like this will happen along the way.
Sorry I can’t take the kids like I used to –every Friday or Sunday. Miss all of you, won’t be much of a Christmas, but we might do a little Hannukah/Christmas mix, and lots of music! I think it’s good that you are keeping a steady stream of news, not just highlight photos. And Seiza and I are quite serious about meeting up with you sometime in the coming year. We bought the house in Independence OR, but it will be months of work on this place, and months of work on that place. When it’s all settled and we’re actually moved in, we will think about travel again. Boston U is keeping me very busy, but that also means nice paydays. And Seiza has been called back for work from time to time, plus she will set up a private practice when we settle in Indy.
Keep us informed on everybody’s health; are you doing any skype or facetime communications? Would be nice to talk to the kids and you.

  6. Sukey, I’m so sorry to hear Cork is so sick. That sounds lousy and very stressful. The irony that it happened on “vacation “. Love to you all. Jamie

  8. Oh dear..I sure hope he is improving. I recently had a 5 day stretch of fever and headache. No other symptoms except occasional mild nausea and decreased appetite. I took Tylenol every 6 hours which helped. I think it was flu even though I got vaccinated. Anyone else sick?
